Do not transfer care between land crabs
The recent Oryx survey of brachyuran land crabs in the online aquarium trade found frequent taxonomic and naming problems. “Rainbow crab”, “moon crab”, “Halloween crab” and “vampire crab” can be applied inconsistently. Ask for the accepted scientific name and compare it with a museum, taxonomic paper or recognised biodiversity database before interpreting a care sheet.
Scale can change the entire project. Geosesarma dennerle is a small land-dwelling sesarmid from Java. Cardisoma guanhumi is a large coastal land crab whose adults build substantial burrows. These are not alternative colours for one paludarium. If the seller cannot document identity, assume neither a small adult nor simple requirements.
Design from burrow and movement evidence
University of Florida guidance describes adult C. guanhumi spending its life away from salt water and excavating deep burrows. That natural history requires a major terrestrial structure, stable excavation material and adult-scale containment. A thin decorative layer over a glass floor cannot express the same behaviour. Another species may shelter in leaf litter or rock crevices instead.
Draw the adult body, turning path, refuge and excavation zone. Subtract water containers, supports and keeper access. Secure heavy features so tunnelling cannot drop them onto the animal. Provide several sight breaks and retreat options when social housing is supported. Never use one universal land-to-water ratio or substrate depth for the entire group.
Keep water tied to the life cycle
The phrase terrestrial does not mean independent of water. Cardisoma guanhumi females release larvae into salt water, and research documents marine or estuarine larval development. In contrast, Geosesarma can have direct development into small walking crabs. Those reproductive strategies create completely different obligations and make casual mixed-species advice unreliable.
Determine whether the named species needs drinking water, soaking access, fresh or brackish conditions, or a marine reproductive phase. Design textured exits so a terrestrial animal cannot become trapped. Record water quality when a pool is biologically active. Do not attempt captive breeding if the larval system, offspring numbers and lawful placement cannot be managed.
Protect the vulnerable moult
Crabs grow by shedding the exoskeleton and remain vulnerable while the new one hardens. The enclosure must let an animal retreat without being dug out, handled or attacked. Provide species-appropriate shelter and keep environmental conditions stable. Do not remove an animal because it appears inactive during a suspected moult.
Observe limb condition, movement, feeding, refuge use and discarded exoskeletons. Repeated injury, failure to move normally, unusual odour or prolonged decline needs advice from a veterinarian or institution with crustacean experience. Avoid salt dips, pesticides, household disinfectants and unmeasured mineral products. A generic aquatic-crab remedy may be unsafe for a terrestrial species.
Close every escape and disposal route
Adult claws can move light lids, while juveniles can pass through small openings. Test latches, ventilation, cable ports and plumbing under realistic service conditions. Use a second closed container during maintenance. Inspect removed wood, plants and substrate for animals and eggs, and never send living material outdoors or down a drain.
Check harvest, possession, import and movement rules at both origin and destination. Florida, for example, regulates harvest of egg-bearing blue land crabs and closes a seasonal fishery, while other jurisdictions may protect different species entirely. USDA APHIS advises prospective U.S. buyers to consult Plant Protection and Quarantine for land invertebrates. Proceed only when identity, lawful source, adult habitat, water use, containment and lifetime placement are documented.
